Somehow, I forced the laptop to tell me what it's problem was. It said scary things like 'registry modified' and 'authority system' and 'post mortem(!!!)' before it spit out the awful truth. It said Trojan. Detected an infected file that cannot be fixed.
Picture me running around, yelling, waving my hands in the air. I know nothing about this sort of stuff, not very smart for someone who counts on the computer to stay in touch with the most important people...
So I asked advice of a few people and one of them gave me the AVG site, with FREE downloads. *giant toothy grin* Then I ran the rootkit and felt panic. It said no problems. ugh... Then I found the Anti Virus. Ran that and found four versions of the trojan. Deleted them all. Part of what makes them bad is that they replicate themselves to reinfect each time you open the machine!
As I'm scooting around the AVG site, I read that the antivirus doesn't check for spyware (which includes worms). Naturally, that goes into the laptop next.
I cruise off to the kitchen to get a drink and come back to read the elapsed scan time is at 5 mins 22 seconds. OMFG!!! It's found 184 infected objects by then!!!
Sure most of them are cookies, but it has turned up one dirty worm too.
I need to expand my education and figure out what all this is about.

updated the file and managed to find four more trojans with different names. *sigh* This is going to be a steep learning curve and a long process.
Ayeee...
glad ya found AVG, I swear by them for AV, and think Norton sucks.
Did ya get my email?
